This morning, I went to the “gym.” Really, I’d call it more of an exercise studio. They’re limiting the class sizes to ten people, but it’s hard to maintain a six-foot buffer because of available space. I got to thinking that with people exercising and huffing and puffing, isn’t that an undue risk? I can go back during the day for “open gym,” when normally, I’d be about the only person there. I’m planning on doing that. What are your thoughts?

Yea, I have a pick-up volleyball game Wednesday.  I'm really nervous about going.  To make it worse, I've skipped the last 3 weeks with A leg injury so I REALLY want to go but really think I shouldn't

I work out alone, haven’t been to a gym in a few years. In hindsight, gyms feel like having cable — not a bad idea, but far from necessary once you wean off of it. I would not personally want to go to a gym at the moment, but if I were single and had no contact with the sick or elderly, I might consider it.

Related - After just 5 minutes of chatting yesterday, my 9-year-old uttered the phrase out of thin air: “So it went B-17, B-29, B-36, then B-52?”

Basically! This homeschooling thing is already working. And that concludes our unit on the Army Air Force and Strategic Air Command.

Definitely. Makes sense to me that more vigorous lung activity would increase the range of any airborne virii (virae?) that someone emits. At the very least ex ercise is more likely to aggravate a coughing fit.

LOL. I didn’t want to confuse him just yet . We just covered the basic idea of nuclear deterrence, which he understood pretty well (in discussing how the B-36 was just a big flex, not for actually dropping bombs...at least not in practice).

But he can already tell you about how the US and Russian space programs came heavily from ex- Nazis. Practical learning.

You shouldn’t go to the class. Open gym is OK. Wipe down surfaces. But there may be more people at the open gym now. Remember there may be contagious people who show no symptoms. And people who haven’t developed the symptoms yet. We don’t have enough testing so assume there’s a lot more cases out there.

Two considerations:

1. Personal: You getting the virus. Most likely mild-moderate symptoms. Probably not a big deal but a decent chance of being miserable for two weeks- I don’t need that.

2. Societal: Not practicing social distancing means you’re possibly contributing to the spread and making efforts to ‘flatten the curve’ to allow our system to manage the severe cases harder. Increasing the risk to the vulnerable. Not looking out for the greater good.

B-36 is nuts. You never hear about those. Who thought up that one?

The whole crowd size limitation is not about keeping you from getting sick, its about letting you get sick some other time. Just like the old statistical example that if you put like 75  random people in a room, the chances are nearly 100% that two of them share a birthday, if you put 20 people in a room, the chances of someone having transmissible CV are probably like 3x the chance than if you only have 10. They still aren’t zero.  If you want to avoid getting sick, your exposure to other people should be NONE.

Just my SWAG analysis of the situation.

Don’t go. Applies to pretty much anything you don’t NEED to do.

The point of social distancing isn’t just to avoid yourself from getting it (which may not be that big a deal depending on how old and healthy you are), but to prevent the virus from being able to spread (i.e. by using you as a carrier).

Yes it’s a pain in the butt, but many people are hunkering down - not because they love doing it, neither is it because they want to make it more fun for other people to enjoy the restaurants that are otherwise always booked or do fun things that are otherwise too crowded .

Every incremental bit we all do to stay put the more we’re helping each other.

https://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/prepare/transmission.html

Person-to-person spread

The virus is thought to spread mainly from person-to-person.

Between people who are in close contact with one another (within about 6 feet).

Through respiratory droplets produced when an infected person coughs or sneezes.

These droplets can land in the mouths or noses of people who are nearby or possibly be inhaled into the lungs.

Then again...

Page last reviewed: March 4, 2020

WTG CDC.

I would be slightly concerned about expelled droplets, but also sweat gets everywhere. If there’s any equipment involved at all, I’d pass.

I think Oppo environment shifted some weeks back when there was some unfortunate posting, a banishment, and a general desire to have less of that. I think some people went elsewhere. In my case, I rebranded myself with less politics. (I was called O.C. previously.) I am happier here now, and I am glad the shift occurred prior to the current circumstances.
